The skies are blue, the air is yellow with pollen, the bees are buzzing, and the flowers are blooming!
This time of year is a wonder: every day we notice changes when we walk out the door and around the farm. It's amazing how just last week the big tree in front was bare, and now the ground below it is full of catkins, those spikey, dusty tails that create a fluffy nature-carpet!
Our paulownia tree looks like a purple swath of paint down by the pond. It's beautiful. Yesterday our great blue heron circled around it, and then surprised us by bringing a friend. They both flew by several times as we had family brunch on the patio, and we all are hoping maybe they are a mating pair that will set up a home by the pond.
Spring has also brought lots of great times with our Farmer Artists! Just a sampling of what we've been up to:
And to think it's not even May yet!
The Journey to create Full Pocket Farm is finally a reality!
I can't believe I am actually writing those words, as the journey has been longer and harder than I could have ever imagined. It's only through stubborn perseverance and a drive that I never knew I had. Knowing that every challenge meant we were just a little closer to creating a place where my family could share the daily joy we get from our work with others was enough to get me "up and at'em" every day. I have the best, most supportive, and PATIENT family in the world, and they are with me every step of the way.
This little ol' dream started years ago when, as a teacher for children with diverse needs, I began to really think about what the world would offer my students when they transitioned from school to community. My nephew was about to embark on his adult life, and the lack of opportunities available to him became very real. There are wonderful organizations doing amazing things to foster independence, provide skill building, assist with employment, build friendships, and all the things we take for granted... but people with diverse needs have diverse interests too.
So, Full Pocket Farm.
We know it won't be easy. In the next few weeks our barn doors will open wide and our first Farmer Participants will be joining us. I've got to tell you, we've got an amazing group of people and friendships are already forming. We're so inspired by Marsha's kindness, Leah's creativity, Travis' smile...
So bring it on, 2019. Let the Journey continue!
